It's in the poo.

This is a buffalo pie from North Dakota. And she is not actually touching it. I have been waiting to use this photo, and now I have it- a post about poo.

Did you know you can tell if your cattle are getting what they need nutritionally by looking at their patties? In our case, our calves aren't getting enough protein according to the local experts Ron has consulted. They aren't making pies- their poo is tending to horse biscuit type droppings. We have to figure what to add to their diet to increase their protein consumption.

Oh, and we have a recycling program going on here. Our chickens do us a big favor and go in the calf pen and pasture and scratch through the poo, eating undigested grains and fly eggs. When they spread it out like this it keeps things drier and keeps the fly population down. Another good reason to raise chickens...
