Just an update on the chickens after the owl escapade.
The next day I sent the boys out to open the coop, and they counted 9 chickens hanging around outside the coop. They all came home! Even Buster, the rooster, who had been AWOL. I had been hearing him crowing out in the woods, but he wouldn't come home at night. I guess he realized that his flock needed him and his "protection." That's what roosters are supposed to do. (That, and fertilize the eggs.) So he came back to the coop...I guess you could say he flew the coop for a few days.
Total casualities by owl: 1.
