Township Day.

All across Minnesota, there are Township elections and annual meetings today.

Today is Town Day- or Township day- historically, neighbors gathered to make decisions for their township, elect officers, and of course visit and trade news and maybe they even had a potluck!

Today in all the rural areas in Minnesota, you will find cars parked outside of Township halls and the American flag waving in front. Our township will have it's election from 4-8, with the Annual meeting following. I am on the ballot, uncontested, for the clerk position again. (Nobody really wants this job : )

It is grassroots government at it's best. Go vote for or against your neighbor, go give your opinion on which local road should be redone this year. At this level, your voice (and vote) really does have power- last year in our township, one (1!) vote decided who was a supervisor for the next term.

I think that Township government saves us money because it keeps neighbor-to-neighbor issues from having to go farther up the chain (of government) or in court, where it becomes more expensive to resolve issues such as fencelines and local roads. And it keeps the decisions in the neighborhood, where they belong.

So if you live in a township, go vote and stay for the meeting!
